IQ Glass UK were appointed to this small residential project in Windsor to provide our technical glass solutions to a side infill return.

Side Return extensions are small projects but the results can make a dramatic difference to the internal layout of a home. In this project, the installation of a highly glazed extension over unused and underutilised external space brought a massive amount of light into the kitchen space and allowed for the addition of a breakfast bar eating area.

The roof of the side extension is made from one piece of structural glass without any joints for framings needed. The glass specified was an IQ Super Insulating Glass Unit which provides a standard Ug value of  0.6 W/m2K even when horizontal [read IQ’s article on thermal performance in roof glazing for more information]. This glass unit was framelessly fixed to the original building and party wall using structural angle supports.

"The external panel of this Super Insulated Unit was a Solar Control coated unit of glass, this was used in an attempt to stop over heating from the suns radiation"

The external panel of this Super Insulated Unit was a Solar Control coated unit of glass, this was used in an attempt to stop over heating from the suns radiation, reducing the g factor of the glass [read IQ’s article on ‘the g factor’ to understand what this is].

At the far end of the extension aluminium casement doors are used as the access to and from the small rear garden. The glass in this minimal framed door is a standard low-e coated DGU (Double Glazed Unit) which provides an overall Uw value for the door set of 1.6 W/m2K.

Overall the use of highly engineered and thermally broken framing system as well as sensible utilisation of IQ’s technical glass solutions helps create a warm and useable extension to the side of this traditional terrace home.

IQ Glass work on a large range of projects from huge residential new builds to smaller projects like this. It could be said that by using a specialist architectural glazier on a smaller project will generate much more value for money as it is on these projects were minimal framing and intricate detailing are important to maximise the space and light available.
