Our Top 10 Architectural Glazing Projects of 2017

Written by Rebecca Clayton

Water End House, Hertfordshire, 2017. Architect: Kirkland Fraser Moor.

At IQ Glass UK are lucky enough to be able to work on some of the UK’s most exciting and prestigious residential architectural projects and 2017 has been no exception.

Here we are examining some of our favourite completed projects from 2017:

Silver House

Silver House

This new build home in Wales has been widely recognised throughout the architectural design community winning a RIBA Regional Award as well as being shortlisted for the RIBA Stephen Lawrence Prize 2017.

The modern architectural design was proposed by Hyde+Hyde Architects with IQ Glass UK designing and providing all specialist architectural glazing. The resulting home is light and bright, making the most of the fantastic countryside views that surround it.

Structural Glass Walls

Frameless Glass Balustrades

Ravendson Street IQ Glass

Ravensdon Street

A conservative rear extension in London achieved a unique and modern design with the inclusion of our Vitra Pivot Doors to the rear. Rather than opt for a fully glazed elevation to the back of the extension the homeowners here chose to include two of our minimally framed pivoting doors finished in a bronze effect powder coat.

The resulting extension design offers something unique. Designed with a brick exterior in keeping with the surrounding properties the large glass doors bring in light and provide wide open doorways to the back of the house.

Forty Farm IQ Glass

Forty Farm

This house design was a little bit different to our normal project designs. Set within the sprawling countryside of Wales the residential development was made with a Welsh Oak frame. Our minimal glazing was expertly interwoven between the warm timber structure to bring in light and merge the line between inside and out.

Various highly technical architectural glazing products were used throughout the building including minimal window sliding doors that go into pockets as well as frameless glass links.

Ashford Mill IQ Glass

Ashford Mill

A small project for us but a fantastic renovation project and a real labour of love for the homeowners. Ashford Mill is a listed corn mill building in Derbyshire. The expert renovation project went to great lengths to preserve as much of the original building character as possible.

In keeping with this design intent, our Mondrian® External system was used as a thermally efficient replacement door to the main elevation of the home. The arched heads of the steel doors were designed to fit perfectly into the existing stone archway of the door.

For those that want an up-close look the home is currently available to rent through Air BnB.

Hidden House

This was another award-winning house project from IQ Glass. The ‘Hidden House’ by Coffey Architects won a RIBA Regional Award for the London category and was shortlisted for House of the Year.

Nestled in a difficult plot on the site of an old prison Hidden House had to make the most of the space available. Clever applications of architectural glazing were included throughout the new build home design to ensure light and space permeated the building.

Rowood IQ Glass

Rowood Farmhouse

2017 saw a movement away from your typical contemporary housing design with the increase in popularity of steel framed glazing. These industrial style doors were used here to create a steel framed extension more in keeping with the original house design.

By mixing our Mondrian® External steel doors with a steel supported structural glass box the resulting glazed extension offered a unique design as well as a striking double height glass extension space.

Water End IQ Glass Water End House, Hertfordshire, 2017. Architect: Kirkland Fraser Moor.

Water End

Looking at the images of this house it is easy to see why it is one of our favourite projects of 2017. The new build house in Buckinghamshire by Kirkland Fraser Moor uses wide and expansive elevations of glass throughout the home to integrate the house into the surrounding landscape.

With a double height elevation of sliding doors and structural glass as the main focal element of the design the glass specification was very important here. IQ worked closely with the architects in order to achieve the design they wanted.

Gibson Square IQ Glass

Gibson Square

We always love trying something new and different so this small basement extension got our attention with the use of our Mondrian® External doors in a pivoting design.

Here the steel framed doors were made using our thermally broken system in galvanised steel that was then powder coated to the clients preferred RAL colour. Elsewhere a structural glass floor and frameless balustrades allow light to penetrate the sub-floor living spaces.

The Watermill IQ Glass

The Watermill

This is a modest project compared to some of our large architectural glazing packages but it was no less impressive. The small-scale glazing works were run by our dedicated small works division who designed a bespoke solution for the internal steel framed screens to this renovation.

It is another fantastic example of the current trend towards industrial interior design and the ongoing love of steel framing. Our Mondrian® Internal solution was used in multiple sliding door installations to separate the living areas from bedroom areas of the apartment renovation.

Belle Vue IQ Glass

Belle Vue

This project was notable thanks to the real mix of glazing design techniques that were used throughout. Curved double glazed units to the rear offered a natural shape to the back of the house. A striking double height façade of reflective glass created the illusion of space in a narrow side garden plot and Zen garden. Slim framed sliding doors to the garden room offered unparalleled views of the English South Coast.

In addition to the above architectural designs, many of our glazing projects have been featured throughout the architectural awards over 2017. You can find out more about these projects through the links below.
