How to Improve Natural Light in Narrow Properties

IQ Glass provided and installed all the glazed elements to this residential basement refurbishment. Natural light is an important aspect of making a living space enjoyable an useable.

To the courtyard of the main house IQ engineered a walk on glass floor light, measuring over 9m², to allow vertical light down into the basement space. The rooflight is comprised to two double glazed panels of toughened laminated structural glass. Above the external edges are back painted to hide all fixings, internally the building finishes hide these elements, leaving just the glass and supporting glass beam visible.

The light well around the stair access to the basement is surrounded by three number panels of fixed structural glass. These double glazed units faceted around the curving stairwell reach nearly 6m in height and allow natural light to bathe the stairwell and entrance to the basement space.

Internally through the basement space glass is used as the partition material. This allows light through from the rooflights and light wells and through the other living, working spaces like the gym and pool and spa. These single glazed glass panels are full height from ceiling to floor to make the internal windowless space seem larger and more open. Standing at nearing 3.5m high these frameless glass walls have integrated frameless pivot doors as access to the various segments of the open space.

Various other glazing elements were supplied through tout the project including some minimal windows sliding door to replace the access doors to the garden, an IQ pivot door on the same elevation. Glass balustrades, frameless picture windows to the sauna, IQ pivot doors to light well, including glass handles to various opening door elements throughout.

This project is a great example of using glass to its full potential, opening out spaces and creating bright serviceable spaces. The high ceilings through the basement make the underground spaces seem more open and larger, removing the feel of claustrophobia that can sometimes come with basement living.
