Stuctural Glazing Loft Extension Project: Bryanston Mews

Written by Rebecca Clayton

"The glass faces are split into symmetrical panes and supported with a steel ‘T’ section rivet which supports all elements along the glass expanse"

IQ Glass provided a full glazing package to this residential roof terrace and refurbishment in London.  As with most properties in this area of London space is like gold dust and this traditional Mews property was no exception.

The extension and refurbishment of this roof and loft space provided an excellent addition to the useable living space in the property, and by integrating the design with a high percentage of glass the space is both light and airy.

The main structural glass cut out covers the stairwell and vertical access to the roof space. With no adjoining windows the space required as much natural light as possible which is introduced by the IQ Glass structural glass roof above.

The glass faces are split into symmetrical panes and supported with a steel ‘T’ section rivet which supports all elements along the glass expanse. This supporting method, though not as minimal as glass beams, this IQ Glass Solution gives the maximum support whilst maintaining internal useable roof heights and still achieving a minimal, flat finish.

"All framework and supporting T’s were powder coated to RAL colour 7016 Matt to create a uniform effect throughout the design"

The pitched structural glass roof comprises of a toughened–laminated double glazed unit and is angle fixed to the original brick building. A minimal supporting steel section is used horizontally across the structural glass to support the roof and vertical glass face.

The stepped roof glazing allows drainage from the front of the glass box with minimal effect and detailing.

IQ’s sliding Minimal Windows are the access points to the small courtyard terrace. In a standard fixed and one sliding configuration. All framework and supporting T’s were powder coated to RAL colour 7016 Matt to create a uniform effect throughout the design.

"From below the rooflight appears frameless and brings in a wall of light"

A walk on skylight was specified to the floor of the courtyard space, above the main bathroom. This glass unit was finished with a translucent effect for privacy into the bathroom space. From below the rooflight appears frameless and brings in a wall of light to cascade into the internal dark space, illuminating the windowless space.

To finish off IQ Glass designed and installed the basic glass balustrading around the access stairwell. Glass balustrades allow a free flow of light down the vertical space without any obstructions of shadowing from the necessary stair supports.
