The Bishops Avenue is a road in London that connects the North side of Hamstead Heath and East Finchley, considered to be one of the wealthiest streets in the world. Dubbed ‘Billionaires Row’ the avenue is known for its luxury “Super Prime” homes, many of which are traditionally designed and have been improved with modern extensions or contemporary renovations.

Architectural glazing is a great choice for traditional properties, offering the flexibility to create bespoke glass installations with very few limitations on size, shape or design.

When extending or renovating a listed or heritage style building it is important to create a clear differentiation between old and new elements, whilst preserving the original architecture.

Specifying minimal glazing solutions, such as structural glazing, on The Bishops Avenue helps to preserve the traditional aesthetic by not distracting from the existing architecture, allowing light and views to pass through the glass thanks to the transparent nature of glass. For the most transparent and subtle design, low iron glass or anti-reflective glass can be specified.

IQ Glass have worked on a number of projects on Billionaires Row, designing and installing bespoke glazing solutions for The Bishops Avenue and tailoring the glazing solutions to suit each individual project.

One of the projects was a glass extension to a traditional style of dwelling, where the homeowners sought to expand their useable space and create a clear differentiation between old and new elements.

The minimal glass extension uses frameless structural glazing on The Bishops Avenue to create floor to ceiling glass walls and a structural glass roof, complete with frameless glass beams for additional structural support.

Traditional French doors were chosen for the glass box, in a double opening configuration that allows the owners to seamlessly open up the space for an indoor-outdoor style of living.

The glass doors were specified with a flush finish, stepping the outside face of the double-glazed unit over the steel subframe and bonding it for a seamless finish.

This bespoke solution created a streamlined design for the external face of the glass extension and ensured that the garden facing side and the drive facing side of the extension had a similar design despite only having doors on one elevation.

The architectural glazing on The Bishops Avenue was specified with backpainted glass, to conceal the fixing details and create a contrast against the surrounding white brick. The structural glass roof on the new extension flooded the space with natural light throughout the day, offering uninterrupted sky views to enjoy at night.

Another project we worked on was an internal refurbishment project, where we designed and installed internal glass pivot doors.

The slim framed pivot doors from the MIRO range of internal glazing were specified with a brass finish and applied reeded films for added privacy.

Internal glazing is a popular choice for pairing with architectural glazing on The Bishops Avenue, creating a continuous glazed theme when installed in conjunction with other external glass solutions.

There are a wide range of options for frame finishes including architectural bronze, brushed stainless steel and specialist finishes.

IQ’s extensive portfolio of glazing designed, supplied and installed on luxury homes also includes projects such as this one of new-build Passivhaus that was granted planning permission under Paragraph 80 (previously Paragraph 79).

Our systems are manufactured completely bespoke, allowing the to be specified to fit in with a wide range of architectural styles.
